The world's first solar-powered car, capable of driving long distances off-road without recharging, has successfully completed a test run through Morocco and the Sahara. The two-seater Stella Terra has driven a record 1,000 km, Ferra reports.
The machine was developed by students at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
The Stella Terra runs on energy from multiple solar panels on the roof, has a top speed of 145 km/h, weighs just 1.2 tonnes and has a range of at least 710 km on a sunny day.
The vehicle has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows it to operate in less sunny conditions but over shorter distances.
The students behind the project hope their development will inspire major car companies to create more environmentally friendly vehicles.
