In August, 165,165 battery-powered electric vehicles were sold in the EU. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), this is 118.1% more than in August last year. And for the first time, the share of electric vehicles in the total number of cars sold in the EU exceeded 20%.
As ACEA notes, with the exception of Malta, all EU markets showed double- and triple-digit year-on-year growth in EV sales. At the same time, Belgium has the highest growth - by 224.5%. And sales of electric vehicles in Europe's largest market, Germany, grew by 170.7%. Since the beginning of the year, according to ACEA, almost 1 million electric vehicles have been sold in EU countries.
Car sales in general also increased in August. Last month, 787.6 thousand cars were sold, which is 21% more than in August 2022. Experts assess this figure as quite high, especially considering that August is traditionally one of the weakest months of the year for car sales.
Moreover, as ACEA notes, August has become the 13th consecutive month of growth in car sales. Among large markets, sales grew most actively during this period in Germany (+37.3%), France (+24.3%) and Italy (+11.9%). At the largest European car manufacturer Volkswagen Group, car sales increased by 21.2%, the company sold 209.5 thousand cars, maintaining a market share of 26.6%. The second largest manufacturer, Stellantis, saw sales rise by 6.4%, and Renault Group by 22.3%.
